The Famous Grouse Experience today announced it is the first Scottish whisky distillery to launch a Cookery School and Whisky School. In addition, a new Malt Experience is being planned to showcase The Famous Grouse Malt range.
The BAFTA award-winning distillery, located in Crieff, is investing over £50,000 to develop these new facilities. In particular the Malt Experience, to be used exclusively for The Whisky School and VIP visits, will provide a unique opportunity for the public to see behind the scenes and view areas of the distillery normally closed to the public.
Cookery classes started already last month (January) while The Whisky School and Malt Experience will open at the end of March.
The one-day Cookery School will be run by The Experience’s award-winning chef, Steven Craik. It will involve an introduction to the distillery, participation in The Famous Grouse Malt Challenge, enabling consumers to discover which malts to marry with certain foods, and a demonstration by the chef of a range of dishes using local produce. Participants can then re-create three of the dishes to enjoy for lunch.
The course costs £100 and can be purchased as a voucher, making it an ideal gift. Places are limited to 14 at a time and it is designed for adults who have a love of cooking and enjoy good food. The dates for the first classes, which run from 10am to 4pm, are Saturday 27th January, Friday 30th March, Friday 4th May and Friday 28th September.
The Whisky School involves spending a day with Neil Cameron, manager of Scotland’s oldest working distillery, Glenturret. It will provide an insight into the nation’s favourite drink, enabling visitors to learn everything from whisky distillation and blending, through to nosing and tasting. The highlight of the day will involve consumers enjoying a full sensory encounter when they visit the new Malt Experience. Here, consumers will be able to “nose†straight from the cask The Famous Grouse Malt range, exclusive to the distillery. This is followed by a three course lunch, accompanied by the appropriate whisky serves and presentation certificate and voucher for the gift shop.
The Whisky School course, which costs £100 and is available in gift vouchers, is limited to 12 places per session and will run from 10am to 4pm on Friday 30th March, Friday 4th May and Friday 28th September.
Jeremy Speirs, general manager of The Famous Grouse Experience, said: “The launch of these new courses and the Malt Experience marks a new chapter at The Experience that has seen significant reinvestment in the last 12 months. With such prolific growth in the malt whisky sector, opening these courses allows us to bring alive both the nosing and tasting elements of blended malt whisky but also, through the Cookery School, its perfect marriage with Scottish food.â€
The Experience has won a number of prestigious awards including a BAFTA for its interactive show, five-star accreditation by VisitScotland and was recently named Perthshire Business of the Year 2006.
