The Edrington Group, makers of The Famous Grouse, has today announced the launch of The Black Grouse whisky to the Global Travel Retail market.

The Black Grouse is a blend of The Famous Grouse with fine Islay malt whiskies to create a smooth, peated, blended whisky. The Black Grouse is the newest addition to The Famous Grouse core product range having been launched earlier this year to the Swedish domestic market.

According to Helen Potter, innovation and development manager for The Famous Grouse, said; “At first taste of this whisky you’ll be surprised by the rich, flavoursome smoky influence of the peated malt whisky, then you’ll experience the trademark smoothness of The Famous Grouse. The finish is long, smoky and aromatic and a just reward for embracing the darker side of Scotland’s favourite whisky!”

The product will be priced at €19.99 (RRP) and will be available worldwide from 22nd October in all major international airports and selected airlines and ferry lines.

The Black Grouse bird (Tetrao tetrix), the inspiration behind this newest blend of whisky, is also a distant relative of Scotland’s national game bird, the Red Grouse (Lagopus Lagopus), which originally inspired The Famous Grouse. In the UK the Black Grouse ranges mainly over uplands from Wales to North Scotland but their numbers have declined by 28% since the 1970s and work is currently underway to conserve this distinctive bird.

A really great tasting whisky, hints of Talisker? in the blend. It really tastes like a single malt. FANTASTIC.

Had my fist taste last weekend. One advice to you: does not mesh well with Black Label Johnnie Walker… what was I thinking… I ended up puking. The taste also is not comparable at all to the finer Johnnie Walker.

I bought a bottle because it was $30 cheaper than the normal single malt that I drink. I should have known better. It’s not good. I’m drinking it with coke. Sue me.
