Bowmore is inviting consumers to discover premium experiences with the launch of an extension to their website – The Bowmore Way.

A series of films illustrating the perfect way to make the most of experiences will feature on www.thebowmoreway.com, with an expert providing a step-by-step guide.

Grandmaster Jacob Aagaard, British Chess Champion shows the Bowmore way to checkmate in just four moves while Maria Soep, the World’s Champion Porridge Maker from the Roineabhal Guesthouse in Kilchrenan in the far north of Scotland advises how to cook porridge to perfection.

Glen Moore, Bowmore brand director, said: “This unique online development allows Bowmore to drive awareness across domestic and international markets”

Other advice includes:  how to tie a bow tie; lighting a cigar; shucking an oyster as well as extending consumers whisky knowledge by showing how to cut peat; turn barley and nose whisky.

What’s extra cool is that this is the first campaign I’ve seen coming out from a Whisky brand that utilizes the blog as a content management tool. Good work Bowmore!

Kevin Erskine, the writer behind The Scotch blog announced the winners of the 2007 Drammies today.

The Scotch blog, always ‘tongue in cheek’ delivers a competition to match that reputation. The Drammies isn’t for the brands that pay up the big cash it’s for the brands of the peoples (even though they of course match sometimes).

As Kevin puts it: “The Drammies were created to be, above all, a “People’s Choice” award and to try to disregard the influence that the industry has over the spirits writers and periodicals that generally grant the awards that get touted.”

Among the Winners my personal favorites are:

Distiller/Blender/Independent Bottler of the Year – Bruichladdich.
These guys does hell of a work when it comes to deliver a great product. The fact that they’re Islay and still manages to not get caught in the fire…or shall we say the smoke after the fire…shows that they got a style of their own. My closet is filled with 3 bottles from the links series, a The XVII and another The Fifteen.

Most Innovative New Product – Compass Box Canto Series
Oh how I love the Canto. Apart from that I’ve had 7 different Compass Box’es flown over. (They are hard to get hold of in Sweden). Among the other ones the Peat Monster and Hedonism (Nailed best new product) are my personal favorites.

Best New Product (Non-whisky i.e., book, resource, web site, etc) – Dr Whisky
Congratulations Dr Whisky! You deserve it. Damn your site rocks. I wish I had the time and ehh…body to do what you do.

The one I don’t agree with among the winners is the ‘Glenmorangie Brand overhaul’. At first I did though. Then I bought The Original, a bottle of Lasanta and a Nectar Do’r at Heathrow a couple of weeks ago. And even though I’ve only popped the Nectar I must say my point of view turned 180° (funny…they’re the agency behind the rebranding) after sipping some of that juice.

Visit The Scotch Blog for all the information!

Thanks for a great competition Kevin!

When you work hard all day with your head and know you must work again the next day what else can change your ideas and make them run on a different plan like whisky? - Ernest Hemingway

Found this quote while I was surfing the net for Whisky news. It pretty much summarizes my point of view as well.

Slainte Mr Hemingway!

The Balvenie Rose 16 year old Single Malt Whisky

Today is the day of giving. And I do wish I could give you all a bottle of Balvenie’s latest elixir, but that would ruin me. Instead I’ll give you the news about it.

If you wish to return the gift…just keep spreading the blog. I’m doing this for fun, but more readers give me more energy and more energy gives you more news.

The whisky, The Balvenie Rose, was inspired by the romantic history of the now ruined Balvenie Castle in whose shadow the Distillery lies, the annual rent of which was fixed at a single red rose in 1460.

In the 15th Century the Castle was owned by the Fair Maid of Galloway, Margaret Douglas, but following the rebellion of the infamous Black Douglasses against the King, all of the family’s titles and estates were forfeit to the Crown. The King, however, was so taken with Margaret’s beauty, that he reinstated her at Balvenie Castle for the unusual annual rent of a single red rose.

The Balvenie Rose is a 16 year old single malt Scotch whisky that spends its final stage of maturation in casks from Portugal used in Port production, giving the whisky a delicate rose hue. The Balvenie Malt Master, David Stewart describes the whisky as having a distinctly floral aroma with hints of rose petals; and a sweet and rich taste bringing an abundance of fruit; raisins, sultanas, apricots and a little citrus all overlaid with gentle spice and delicate oak notes.

Rob MacPherson, of The Balvenie Distillery said: “This wonderfully romantic story of Margaret Douglas and the single rose inspired us to create The Balvenie Rose Single Malt. We’re so pleased with the result that we decided to also name a red rose in honour of this historic tale.”

Just 426 bottles of Balvenie Rose have been produced. The whisky is for sale exclusively at The Balvenie Distillery Shop in Speyside and retails at £100 a bottle.

The Balvenie Rose plant can be purchased from specialist growers and costs £5.95 barefoot, or £9.95 potted plus P&P.

japanese_whisky_guide1.jpg

Are you one of the lucky ones who are about to travel to Japan? I’ve been wanting to go for ages but haven’t come around to it yet.

Then you should pay our friend Chris and his blog Nonjatta a visit. Chris has just posted a great piece that guides you to the best whisky bars in Japan.

Chris writes: “Tokyo is probably the best place in the world to drink Scotch single malts (not to mention Japanese single malts) as well as many other alcoholic beverages. Unfortunately, most visitors from overseas are not aware of this and come and go without taking full advantage”

Here’s the post

Ardbeg is to release a limited edition to celebrate the Young series

February 1, 2008

When Mickey Head’s attended the Stockholm Whisky Festival I asked him if there would be last bottling in the Young, Still Young etc series. He smiled and said, I don’t think so, but you’ll never know.
Today however I heard through the grape wine that Ardbeg are planning a new limited edition.
