the_macallan_estate.jpg The Edrington Group has launched an environmentally friendly, limited edition extension to its The Macallan Single Malt Scotch brand. It’s called The Macallan Estate.

The Estate Oak, introduced exclusively for global duty free airports, has been rolled out to support ongoing woodland regeneration in Scotland. For each bottle sold, The Macallan will plant an oak tree on The Macallan Estate in Speyside.

The whisky has been matured in both European (ex-oloroso sherry) and American (ex-bourbon) oak. The bottling is without an age statement and comes without a box, to reduce the amount of waste. The labels are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and are sourced from responsibly managed resources.

“We anticipate it will be a huge success with people wanting to make a difference to the environment,” said William Ovens, The Edrington Group’s global travel retail area director.

The Macallan Estate Oak is available in world duty free stores and priced at GBP34.99 (US$69.35) per bottle.

I can’t wait to try this… oh wait, I have to get on a plane. Maybe they’d better plant two trees.

Now even Macallan is trying to make money on the “environmentalist” angle?! Planting a tree on their estate is a near meaningless gesture that is being utilized to ramp up more sales. If they really cared, why don’t they take a portion from the profits and donate them to more meaningful environmental efforts? Lastly, if I’m buying a Macallan at the airport, it will be the cask strength, not some “go green” fad with no age statement.

Good point! Any other thoughts on this? Is Macallan jumping on the climate train or do they mean business?

What’s next? Macallan produced with renewable energy or “the nuke free edition” or maybe a non-charcoaled version for the anti-smoking people or even better a carbon still version to reduce the heavy metal residues in the spirit. Or even better : you’re Macallan was transported to the airportshop by a camel to reduce the ecologic footprint (and later bought by a donkey). Did you know that they have a new staff at Macallan ? Paris Hilton and Lidsay Lohan doing the marketing, Amy Winehouse as Master Distiller and Pamela Anderson as the new packaging designer. Maybe they will take Gordon Brown as CEO when he will be available nest fall.Woehahahaha….
Greets to all.
