The Kentucky straight bourbon brand Basin Hayden’s has partnered with Out and Chicago  Home + Garden magazines for a design competition.

The rules are simple. To enter, create an original design inspired by Basil Hayden™ bourbon in one of the following categories:  Artwork; Fashion, Furniture; or Interior Design Elements (e.g., lighting, pillows/curtains, room accents).  Submit: (i) your design plans, (ii) your design category (Artwork, Fashion, Furniture or Interior Design Elements) and (iii) an original essay consisting of no more than 100 words, in English, describing your design, how it is inspired by Basil Hayden bourbon and why you deserve to win.

Nate Berkus, TV personality and interior designer from Chicago will then select the top three entries to be founded for production.

A Grand Prize consisting of Ten Thousand Dollars ($10,000) will be awarded the winner.

Now, there’s one catch to this. You have to be at least 21 years old and a legal residents of Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin. Bummer.

So, if you’re 21, live there and think you have a chance, head over here to win.

here are my tasting notes if anyone is interested

Color: Amber, looks like most bourbons.
Nose: Light and pleasant aroma, some mild rye spicyness, peppery accompaniment, tea? Not spectacular, but still good.

Palate: Vanilla, honey, mild rye, very mild bite, soft oaky wood. This is a real gentle drinker, why would anyone, no matter how much a neophyte add water or ice to this? Good, but disappointing, not much different from the Maker’s Mark, other than the rye, and it is even less aggressive in flavor than the vanilla honey sweetness of Maker’s Mark.
Body: Thin and a bit watery. Inoffensive.
Finish: Short, clean, and sweetness lingers, but altogether a nothing of a finish. If this is good bourbon, I’m sticking with scotch. Not to disparage this too much, its still a solid whiskey, but its not awe inspiring by any stretch of the imagination.
